Stressing out over schoolThis is the first panel of my triptych. It was made to convey the stress placed on students, in this case, me, because of school work and constant deadlines. This image was partially inspired by The Persistence of memory.

Looking forward to the futureThis is the second panel of my triptych. It was made to represent my looking forward to the future, and all it may have to bring. I chose to do a landscape because I wish to travel and see the world. This image was inspired by

Pollution: The PaintingThis is the third panel of my triptych. It is a direct continuation of the second panel. It also represents my contemplation of what my future holds, but is more representitive of my anxieties than my hopes. This image was inspired by

Planning
For this project, I need to make three separate yet related artworks. Each needs to relate back to me in some way. My idea for the first panel is to show my personal experience with school-related stress, particularly stress caused by unholy amounts of homework and deadlines. The second panel will be more of a landscape; it is meant to represent me looking forward to the future and some of my higher hopes. The last panel will be a continuation of the second. It will be the same landscape, but polluted to represent that reality is often disappointing, and other future-related anxieties.
Inspiration
Planning Sketches
This first sketch is my one and only idea for the first panel; it focuses on stress I experience as a student. This stress is very familiar to me, especially towards the end of the semester when all of my teachers assign large projects. As someone who cares deeply about their grades, and experiences pressure from parents because I was the smart kid in my k-8 school, I often stress about the workload, which I depict as an impossibly tall pile of textbooks. This near constant stress, and the feeling of being worn out it gives me, is depicted through the tired figure sitting at the desk.

This sketch is for the second panel. This is supposed to represent my hopes for the future, "the future" being when I am finally free of school, portrayed through my desire to travel the world and see all the wonders of nature. The sketch depicts a figure sitting by a lake, far enough away to just be a silhouette, looking off into the distance.
|
This is the sketch for the last panel, a continuation of the first. It is the same view of the future as the previous panel, but everything is polluted. This is meant to represent my actual, much more cynical views and anxieties of what the future holds. More simply, its everything that I don't want to happen. Industrial buildings can be seen in the background, symbolizing my top anxiety; I'm just going to end up in some office/cubicle job that I hate for the rest of my life. Every plant is dead or dying, and the painting will have a brown color scheme to represent my worry that my life will be dull and unpleasant. These are all exaggerated, but still troublesome.

Process
Experimentation
The experimentation for this project was more figuring out which colors to use, how to blend them, and which brushes to use. I did this project entirely at home, equipped with paints and brushes I hadn't used since the fifth grade. Surprisingly, only one color was deteriorated.
Process
After I drew my sketches, I had to transfer my image onto the canvas. To do this, I used a grid transfer. This project required me to apply paint in several stages. To the left is a picture of my project after I applied the first layer of paint. The grid lines are still visible in the areas I didn't paint. The process was the same for all three artworks.
