Alone at the partyThis is the first half of the dyptych illustration, and is the side that depicts sadness and stillness. The figure within was inspired by a figure from Picasso's blue period, particularly "sleeping drinker." It is composed of colored pencil on paper.

Havin' a good timeThis is the second half of my dyptych illustration, the side meant to convey happiness and energy. The figures within are inspired by an artwork by Tolouse-Lautrec. It is composed of colored pencil on paper.

Planning
Planning
This project was about opposites. Each artwork had to convey the opposite theme of the other. I chose to convey the difference between happiness/energy and sadness/stillness. To do this, I had to brainstorm what was usually associated with the two concepts. For happiness, I had come up with warm colors, and several active figures were needed. For sadness, I figured blues and one still figure were the way to go.
Inspiration
I chose this image, titled La troupe de Mademoiselle Eglantine, by Toulouse-Lautrec for inspiration because I felt the figures fit the criteria that I had previously brainstormed. There are warm colors on the figures themselves, they seem active and energetic, and there are several figures to give a sense of togetherness.
|
I chose this image, Sleeping Drinker, by Picasso because I was looking at Picasso's blue period for inspiration for the sadness/stillness half, and this artwork looked like it fit within the scene I was trying to create.
|
Planning Sketches
This first sketch was my first idea, and the one I used. While brainstorming, I had to figure out how the two figures/concepts would go together. So, I came up with a place where there is a stage and an audience would be around it, similar to what I see in stand up comedy videos I watch on YouTube instead of sleeping.

Process
Experimentation
My experimentation with this project was a long process. Drawing on the figures into the scene I created was not at all difficult. I started to face challenges when it came to coloring the project. I used prismacolor brand colored pencils, and I could not get them to blend properly at first. This was frustrating, but I persisted. After a while, I figured out how to get it to blend with decent quality, but at this point my artwork looked more like an impressionism project I had in my freshman year that I got a B on, so I decided to just stick with the impressionism look. My frustration with this project lowered the quality, and I wish I would have had more patience to make it look like someone above the age of 5 had colored it.

Process
To complete this project, I first had to do sketches. After that, I transferred the images. I then had to figure out coloring. On the second half, the figures were initially all white, so I had to figure out how to make them colored. I chose to make their dresses pink, to keep the theme of warm colors. After that, I colored and was finished.

Reflection
I believe that this project had not went well. During this project, I had faced several challenges that affected the quality of this artwork. As I had mentioned previously, I was having trouble getting the colored pencils to blend properly. This caused the colors to not blend, and made the artwork look more impressionistic than realistic. Secondly, my own frustration affected my artwork. I was impatient, and as a result I rushed through this project just to get it over with. Writing about it now, I wish I hadn't.
In terms of relation to my references, I did pretty good. Firstly, the figures within are lifted straight from my inspirations. Secondly, The color schemes are the same. The inspiration pieces are mainly blue/gray and yellow, and my artworks are blue with purples and blacks and yellow with oranges and browns.
